Mets vs. Red Sox? Oy!

As Squawker Jon noted last week, we are going to Taxpayer Bailout Field - err, I mean Citi Field - on Saturday, April 4 to see the Mets vs. the Red Sox in an exhibition game.

This game is a huge dilemma for me, and it's not that Jon has forbidden me from wearing Yankee gear to the game (as if I'm going to listen to him!) And that I'm liable to hear "Yankees bleep" before the first pitch is even thrown. I would expect nothing less.

No, my dilemma is about which team I should root for - or root against - more - the Mets or the Red Sox.

Despite their enmity in 1986, the two teams - and their fanbases - have a lot in common besides hating the Yankees and their fans, and having Pedro Martinez pitch for each of them. They also have no use for Roger Clemens (come to think of it, that's something Yankee fans also have in common with Mets and Sox fans!)

The Mets and Sox each have annoying players, like Jose Reyes and Jonathan Papelbon. They also have mascots - Mr. Met and Wally the Green Monster - which many Yankee fans also find annoying (not me, though! I'm a little jealous that the Yanks never had a successful mascot - Dandy was an unmitigated disaster.)

There's also the little brother syndrome each team is afflicted with, where everything they do is viewed through the prism of Big Brother Yankees. (Squawker Jon would agree with me calling Yankees Big Brother, as in "1984"!)

In 1986, I was thrilled to see the Mets beat the Red Sox in the World Series. But I'm not sure what I should do during next month's game. Sit on my hands and stay neutral, like Switzerland? Boo both teams equally? Cheer the Mets, even though it means that Jon and I will be on the same side for once, which seems like that will violate some space-time continuum thingy? (Note - cheering for the Red Sox is not an option. Some lines just can never be crossed.)

Who should I root for - or against? Leave us a comment!

The Mets are from NY, I cheered for them in '86. Specially because they won against the Red Sox.
A friend of mine is a huge Red Sox fan and went to fantasy baseball camp for his second year in a row and both times I said "say hello to Mike Torrez from Bucky F. Dent." This year he sent me an autographed baseball! There is even a picture of his '77 ring over the same baseball, of course I'm not getting the ring, only the baseball.
When they mean you harm it means you are doing something good!

When they played against each other in the World Series ....I just made believe there was no World Series that year.... :o). I guess if I have to root during the regular season I'd prefer the Mets to win only because it makes a difference to us in the standings. Exhibition games ..who the heck cares?? I've got more important things on my mind ..THE YANKEES !!!

As for mascots ...I just want to see great baseball...that's enough fun for me. I do get a kick out of mascots of other teams(except Mr. Met...I still think he's so dopey looking with that big baseball head) but I don't want one for the Yankees because I can only take mascots in small doses.

Get well soon Alex ...we need ya !!

Go Yankees 2009!!

CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION.
IT'S EASY, IF YOU'RE A NYer U ROOT FOR NY
RE. MR.MET, I'VE NEVER BEEN A HUGE FAN; BUT HE'S 1,000 TIMES BETTER THAN GRANT'S BORO IDEA. FEW REMEMBER THAT ONE, GUESS IT WAS ONE ASS INTRODUCING ANOTHER.

Good Grief Lisa,

It's just an exhibition game. I saw the Rays/Red Sox Saturday. It was just fun to be outdoors in a ball park where Americans are supposed to be when times are tough. Of course, living in Sarasota, Florida, it's nice to be outside right now. At least you will see some real players at your exhibition game. All the Red Sox were at the World Classic with Captain Jeter.

Enjoy the game!

Well, 11 Mets are in the WBC too so I'm not sure which real players you think she'll see...

Lisa, you must do the right thing and root for the Mets to crush the Red Sox. Yes, it's that simple. Papelbon is way more annoying than Reyes, and don't get me started on Youkilis.

Forgot to add that I just came back from Tampa, and spring training was the best. GO YANKS.

I can respect your position on not rooting for the Red Sox. Proceed with caution - any positive gesture toward the Mets may come back later via Squawk from Jon. Wish I was able to get through to get tix - would like to see both new Stadiums. Enjoy the game!

Would anyone consider Axelrod the "worry" dog, when Flying A gasoline sponsored the Yankee games on WPIX, a successful mascot? "Ooh, did we worry", when we had to look at some of those awful Yankee teams in the late
60's.

Interesting name you posited for citi field lisa, almost begs for a response, though I'll admit it will not be a very original one. perhaps the mascot for the yankees can be a giant, smiling syringe? would almost be appropriate in yankee stadium, the "stadium that steroids built."

James,

Since the game she is going to is April 4, I assumed most of the players would be back.

Coming from a fan who's team never did shit for NY except field a bunch of cokeheads in 1986 to beat Boston on account of an error. You met fans are the most envious, bitchiest, sniveling little rat bastards ever to disgrace this town. Hopefully your team will collapse with more Ponzi schemes and corporate sponsors going bankrupt. The Dodgers leave for L.A. in 1955, and 7 years later the Mets were founded to replace them like some phoenix rising out of the ashes to same National League baseball in NY from the big, bad Yankees?

Pa-lease. For all your tough defiant talk and media bandwagon-hopping diatribes about A-Rod and the Yankee misgivings, at the pace the Mets are winning chapionships it'll take about 475 years to just break even with the Yankees.

replace the word "same" with "save"
