Robinson Cano and Damaso Marte: Ain't that peculiar?

My Squawker partner made all sorts of references to Marvin Gaye in his last post. I'm going to have to make one of my own now. "Ain't That Peculiar" that Robinson Cano and Damaso Marte are now saying they're injured, after playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic?

According to mlb.com:

Cano said that he had felt some discomfort before reporting to the Classic club, but did not mention it to the Yankees.

"It was a little bit tight and it never went away," Cano said. "I can throw. It just feels tight. ... I was hoping that it was something that if I stretched, it'd be all right."

Why didn't Cano say anything about this before going to the WBC? And what's the story with the Yankees? Is management too hard to talk to about this?

Then there's his WBC teammate Damaso Marte, who is also hurting for certain. Here's the story from today's Newsday:

Marte's injury is more curious. He said he was bench-pressing weights - his own idea - before the Dominicans' final game, in which he pitched.

"I don't completely understand what he was doing lifting," [Joe] Girardi said.

I don't either.

Let's hope Cano and Marte recover quickly, or this is going to be a very long season.

But what do you think? Leave us a comment!

I really don't understand the issue that Latin Americans have with injuries. Maybe they fear that they will lose playing time if they disclose it.
The Guatemalan that was closer to reaching the majors, Hugo Pivaral, blew his chances by not disclosing an injury.
It is very irresponsible of Cano, specially for having the disappointing season he had. He shouldn't even had played for the WBC.
In general, I think that in Latin America there is a problem with accountability (there is not a word that translates 100% to Spanish).

I dont think the problem is accountability. If anything I'd bet it was more akin to the military culture of being touch, not whining, don't appear weak.

I'm not saying that is what it is for sure. But I don't think its accountability.

Players are supposed to disclose their injuries, period. They're employees and highly paid ones at that. Cano told anyone who'd listen how he supports that Dominican trainer who's been banned by MLB. How come he was mute about his injury? I'm furious!

Being from Latin America, from a country were soccer is the most popular sport, I can see some similarities with Brazilian players.
Just to mention a few: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Bebeto and Romario.
All this guys have made their name playing for the Brazilan team, played in Europe and had really fast downturns.
Ronaldo in case, played for Real Madrid in Spain until 2006, for AC Milan in Italy (that is considered a downgrade) in 2007 and now play in Brazil for the Corinthias. The pattern is the same, undisciplined, too much partying injuries resulting in a spiral down.
