It's that time of year again. The fans were so excited. The teams played their hearts out. The halftime show was a must-watch. Even the commercials were fun. Yes, Puppy Bowl V was something else!
Aside from wondering if Bruce Springsteen has like, 50 sets of black shirts, vests, and jeans in his closet, I'm also wondering who fans would like to see stay on the team -Xavier Nady or Nick Swisher? And if they think the Yanks should wade into the still-big free agent pool and pick up anybody else?
I just want to see the Yankees sign Manny Ramirez, after he decides he couldn't trust his current manager. And give ManRam No. 6 to wear. It would make my year.

Based on character, talent, work ethic, ability to get along with teammates, it should be a no brainer to stay with Nady over Swisher. Damon, Melky/Gardner and Nady, with the odd man out as the 4th fielder seems like a solid outfield--not spectular but solid. Let Melky and Gardner fight it out in ST and if either has a brain the will come to camp in top shape and hopefully have worked on their hitting this off season. IMO the key for 09 success is the catcher, if Posada can't catch on a regular basis it is going to be a real problem. Staters, relievers, and infield look very strong, outfield solid but catching is the key.
ReplyDeleteAlmost forgot, plese NO Manny, there will be enough bs going on after classless Joe's book without another club house premadonna!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for that first pitch to be thrown in the first Spring Training game. To me it looks like the team really rounded into form an we may be poised for that dream season you're referring to, Lisa.
ReplyDeleteOnly 12 days left until Pitchers & Catchers - can you feel the excitement??
I've been wondering what's going to happen with the Manny situation. He's still unsigned - but I think he's still going to wind up in L.A. We're going to have more platooning in the outfield with Swisher/Nady and Damon/Melky.
Personally, I don't want the Yankees to trade Nady. He's got a very good attitude and work ethic, and he's also a pretty good fielder and hitter.
I don't think we need Manny and all his potential headaches and baggage. I'll admit, the thought of his bat in the Yankee lineup is awfully tempting, but is it really worth the risk if he decides to abandon ship when he decides he isn't being pampered the way he feels he's accustomed to or entitled to?
Guys, how do you measure ethic, talent and getting along with others players? And how much does it add to wins? I'm not saying it doesn't, but how can you value that?
ReplyDeleteI like Nady but he had an outlier season last year. Swisher has a much better OPS and he was extremely unlucky last year (good line drive percentage BUT extremely low BABIP). No way of getting rid of them because the free agent pool is pretty good with Adam Dunn, Manny Ramirez, Jim Edmonds and Bobby Abreu. So unless there is a major trade, we will have Swisher AND Nady.
I lust for Adam Dunn and Juan Cruz but neither one is a CF, utility infielder nor backup catcher and there is no room for them.
I would like to have Orlando Cabrera or Ty Wigginton as utility infielders, heck I would even give a shot at Nomar Garciaparra.
I'm not quite comfortable with Jose Molina and I would rather have Javier Valentin or Johnny Estrada, but would have to get rid of Molina first.
Manny Ramirez and #6 is a very high price to spite Joe Torre.
Want some baseball? Today is the start of the Caribbean League on ESPN.
I vote "yes" on Nady. I really liked what I saw from last year.

ReplyDelete**I don't know about Gardner, but Melky did real good in winter league in DR, too bad his team (my hometown team) sucked real bad!! If he can hit in the big club as he was hitting with las aguilas in winter ball, he has a job!!
As a Red Sox fan, I would hate to see Manny sign with the Yankees. But also, for all my friends on this site, I would hate it for you too. I think he is absolutely what you don't need right now. He is a brilliant player but after last year, I would be so suspect of his ability to mentally last a year in NY. But if he did sign, it would make the games and season that much more exciting. We should hear a lot more baseball now that the super bowl is concluded.
ReplyDeleteand Mike, I forgot you had twin nieces. Very cool.
Lola, I hope you are right about Melky, of the two I think he is the better all around player--being a switch hitter gives him a big advantage plus he has some pop in his bat that Gardner lacks. Should be an interesting spring camp.
