Worst. Inning. Ever.

I was just flipping around the dial right now, and saw that the History Channel is currently running their series "Mega Disasters." So I put the show on, and half-expected to see yesterday's Yankee game on the show, along with Krakatoa. Sheesh.

What a nightmare of a game. 22-4? Are you kidding me? And 14 runs in one inning? Unreal.

How bad a game was it? Even Nick Swisher, for once, was at a loss for words:
“I wish I had something good to say,” Nick Swisher said. “I got nothing.”
How bad a game was it? Even Johnny Damon, for once, was unable to find anything positive to say about one of his teammates:
"We have six losses on the year right now and [Wang's] got three of them," Damon said. "And in all three of those games, we've been blown out and we've had to go to our bullpen. So maybe our bullpen's not sharp the following days. So I don't know what more to say, but hopefully he can figure it out because it'd be tough to keep on going like this."
How bad of a game was it? As Ross of New Stadium Insider notes, Freddy Sez was sitting down during the game, instead of stirring up the crowd with the frying pan. And that clip was from the fifth inning, when the score was "only" 16-2. And look how many empty seats there are.

I don't know what's going on with Chien-Ming Wang, but obviously the Yanks can't keep on throwing him out there, with his 36.50 ERA. Especially when his next start would be at Fenway Park. So my guess is that this will happen soon: Phil Hughes, come on down! You're the next contestant on "Wang Isn't Right!"

Also, is it just me, or does it seem that every time the Yankees play on FOX, something terrible happens? Darrell Rasner and Jeff Karstens both got hurt on the mound during FOX Games of the Week. Robinson Cano made three errors in one game on FOX. The A-Rod-Varitek brawl happened on FOX. What else am I missing here?

Oh, and Carl Pavano is pitching today. I am predicting that he throws a great game, as ex-Yankees often seem to do when facing their old team. Hopefully, A.J. Burnett will throw a better game.

What do you think about yesterday's debacle? Leave us a comment!

  1. Lisa,

I think this may be a great opportunity for A-Rod. It seems he gets hammered for his mistakes and never gets the credit for his great play. Maybe things will turn around for the Yankees when he comes back and it will start a more positive relationship for A-Rod and the fans. And I can't feel too sorry for you, you are still a head of my Red Sox in the standings!

  2. Curious what people's opinions are of Damon's remarks.

Seems like the bullpen should have been plenty rested - the Yanks won 3 in a row after his first stinker; CC goes almost 8 then Joba goes 6, but still the bullpen blew it.

Next, Wang is worse than before, yet the bullpen gave up enough runs to lose the game anyway.

Forward to the Stadium opener - sure CC kept it close but 122 pitches in 5.2 isn't really going to help keep your pen rested. Joba didn't see a full 5 the next day, etc.

My point is that there is more wrong than just Wang and perhaps something short and sweet like Swisher's quote would have been better than what sounded like Damon chucking a teammate under the bus. This goes back to that less is more conversation from last week. But I didn't hear Damon say it and maybe it seemed harsher as a standalone quote when read online.

Lisa - Even if Pavano comes out like Cy Young, I'd still put my money on Burnett outpitching him.

btw - love the captioning on the scoreboard. I hope the operator has a hot key to type "crowd boos" or they'll be headed to the DL with carpal tunnel.

    Have a nice Sunday everyone!
