On David Ortiz, missed opportunites, and the trading deadline

A-Rod looks like the truth-teller for the ages compared to his buddy David Ortiz. For all his goofiness, Alex never pretended that he had no idea how he tested positive on a steroids test!

I found David Ortiz' postgame statement ridiculous - here's my piece on it for the The Faster Times site.

At any rate, I should be more upset over all the missed opportunites in last night's Yankees-White Sox game, from the errors to the lack of timely hitting to DeWayne Wise being the late-inning hero for the second time in a week. But hey, I'm still basking in the afterglow of the big Red Sox news.

I did enjoy the heck out of Nick Swisher's ninth-inning, game-tying homer against his own team, though. Hopefully, he'll get even more revenge against the Sox tonight.

Let's hope Brian Cashman has some good surprises in score today, as we wait for the trading deadline.

  1. I'm not real pleased with his initial response. I respect A-Rod for taking the approach he did - presuming that it doesn't come out later that he actually wasn't fully forthcoming and used during other points in his career.

I've never disliked Ortiz - nor was he ever at the top of my favorite player list. So while I definitely think less of him, I'll cheer a 3-run homer that puts my team in the lead anytime.

  2. I thought Ortiz' comments were hilarious also -- I couldn't stop laughing! He said he couldn't make any comment because he had to find out information. HELLO - you're cold busted. What info is there to find out? Fess up and be done with it.

Paul from Boston: Definitely keep Cheering for Papi!! Ever since A-Rod came to the Yanks, he has been my favorite. There have been numerous ups and downs - his stupid comments in the press, not coming through in play-offs and then with his steroid admission - but, I still cheered him and I always will.

  3. Lisa, Papelbon blows a game and Weaver is called again by Torre on extra inning to lose it again and no comments from you?
    What is going on?

Me thinks he knew this news was coming out

  5. "But hey, I'm still basking in the afterglow of the big Red Sox news."

So what is the score now? 2 Red Sox vs. how many yankees?

And Paul, respect A-Rod for the approach he took? The, I don't know what I took because my non-m.d. cousin bought something from a DR drug store and injected it into my $28 million body? Please.

Steroids happened. I am sure there will be many more names. Each new name does not excuse the previous names though. A cheater is a cheater.

  6. Yes, KM, a cheater is a cheater, and because of who cheated, and when, and what teams they were on, and what teams they played for when they cheated, my team can still truthfully be said to have won four World Series in five seasons, while your team hasn't won so much as a Pennant since Iran-contra. (I guess knowing that makes me "an old man.") Or would you have won that 2000 Pennant without Mike Piazza?

I still can't get over the fact that David Or-tease said he's going to find out why he tested positive. I suspect that he's going to find the reason on the golf course. He can do it in October. A, it's not like he's going to be playing baseball that month; and B, it's not like O.J. Simpson's going to be using it to "find the real killer" anymore!

  7. you response makes little sense, old man. Unless you are insinuating that being a cheater is ok as long as you win. In that case, the red sox players implicated are absolved of any wrong doing, right? Which means that Afraud is the guiltiest party of all, because he has cheated and won nothing.

And any refernce to Mike Piazza and steroids is pure conjecture at this point. There has been no verifiable evidence linking him to PED use. Some may surface, but then again it may not.
But I can think of another catcher in NY who should not be above speculation at this point as well, but he will go nameless as I prefer to not cast accusations without corroboration.

  8. Another moronic comment from a short-sighted, narrow-minded and completly biased Yankee hater.

Tell me something, KM, does being a staunch jackass come as naturally to you as it seems, or do you really put a lot of work and effort into it to really embellish this pre-dominant trait of yours?
