Mets optimism not just pie in the sky

In yesterday's entry, I predicted that the Rod Barajas walk-off was just the beginning of more good things to come. I ended by suggesting that the Mets need to have some pies on hand for future walkoffs. Little did I suspect that a pie would be needed only about 18 hours later.

Then again, maybe the Mets were still not finished creating those walkoff pies, considering how little shaving cream or whatever Alex Cora used actually got on Henry Blanco when Cora got to him as Blanco was finishing his postgame interview.

As great as two walkoffs in a row are, and by two different catchers, in front of would-be Met Bengie Molina (out today with an injury), the best news was that Johan Santana was back in form. Maybe it still wasn't quite vintage Santana, but it wasn't 10-runs and a dazed look, either. With Mike Pelfrey's performance Friday, the Mets once again have a top of the rotation.

Squawker Lisa, today is the fortieth anniversary of Willis Reed hobbling onto the court to inspire the Knicks to win their first championship. I'm sure you're looking forward to that day sometime down the road when Nick Johnson hobbles onto the field (even though it's his wrist that got hurt, he'll probably be hobbling anyway) to inspire his teammates.

  1. First the Met fans copied us standing and clapping on 2 strikes, taking Ron Guidry's trademark for future Yankee no-hit hero Dwight Gooden. Then they copy us by getting supremely arrogant after winning in 1986 (and never since). Now the pie thing?

Every year, Met fans look for pie in the sky. And every year, they end up with egg on their faces.
