John Sterling's call for Brett Gardner's home run last night is either genius - or dreck - depending on your point of view. "Gardy goes yardy!" Sterling shouted after the homer. Our friends at "It Is High, It Is Far, It Is Caught" captured the stylings of Sterling.
Squawker Jon thought it was one of Sterling's worst. I think it's so ridiculous, it's funny. What do you think?

Shine: The story behind Francisco Cervelli's great night
How about that Francisco Cervelli? He's filling in for Jorge Posada pretty nicely, both behind the plate and at the bat, with a little inspiration from a little girl at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Last night Cervelli wore a bracelet with the word "shine" on it, a gift from a sick child named Jane. He received the yellow bracelet yesterday that he received yesterday when he and teammate Ramiro Pena visited sick children in the hospital.
It looks like seeing those kids inspired both players - Cervelli went 3-for-3, including his first MLB triple, and made an epic catch while almost falling into the Yankee dugout. And Pena had two RBI. See some of the game highlights here.
Something like that happened at a game Squawker Jon and I attended last year. Remember the first walkoff against the Twins, when Brett Gardner had an inside-the park homer after visiting a heart transplant patient in the hospital and getting a bracelet from her? That was a heartwarming story, as was what happened last night.
In other news, hopefully Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera will be ready to go soon. But I'm still blaming SI for them being hurt - that cover jinx got to them, too!
Sad to see that Ernie Harwell died yesterday. He was such a beloved figure in baseball, and brought so much joy to listeners. I admired the Detroit broadcaster's zest for life.

Comeback karma for Yankees and Mets
When Squawker Lisa and I have gone to a ballgame this year, the karma so far has been all flowing in her direction. After last night, we have now been to two Yankee games together and the Yankees have won both. Lisa went to a Yankee game without me and the Yankees lost.
We have been to two Met games together (one an exhibition) and the Mets lost both, including the game that ended their seven-game winning streak. I went to one other Met game without her and the Mets won.
Guess this means that I should avoid going to the Subway Series with Lisa!
It certainly was an exciting game. Even I appreciated Brett Gardner's inside-the-park home run. There were five homers hit overall, but ultimately Yankee Stadium was not a total hitters park last night since every homer was a solo shot and the score was only 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth.
I was pleased to see that while people cheered for A-Rod when he first came to bat, most fans did not stand for the admitted cheat. The Squawker next to me in her A-Rod shirt was an exception, however.
When Carlos Gomez came to bat against Phil Hughes, I couldn't help but think of Johan Santana. The Yankees refused to part with Hughes, while Gomez was one of the main pieces of the Mets' deal. So far, big advantage Mets.
When Gardner tripled to lead off the ninth, I told Lisa that I would think the Yankees were going to win if top closer Joe Nathan were not on the mound. But Lisa correctly predicted that the Yankees could get to Nathan. She also said it was a mistake to walk Cano to get to Cabrera.
So I brought the karma for 8 2/3 innings but, just like Nathan, couldn't close it out.
Meanwhile, the Mets were down by four runs to Tim Lincecum, so I figured that game would be well out of hand by the time I got home.
But maybe I brought some comeback karma back from Yankee Stadium, since I turned on the TV just in time to see David Wright tie the game with a three-run double. And the Mets would end up with their biggest comeback win of the year.
I guess Jose Reyes really was hurt after all. And while I'm still skeptical about Gary Sheffield long-term, he has gotten two hits in three straight games now that he is getting more playing time. But there is still nothing to suggest that Sheffield is still a power hitter who should be batting cleanup.
Still, 22 runs in three games, two of them without Reyes, all of them without Carlos Delgado. Hard to complain. With Lisa safely 3,000 miles away, let's hope the Mets can keep the good karma on the road trip.

A few random thoughts on the Yankees and the Mets
Great game last night. Andy Pettitte pitched well, Mark Teixeira had a big night, Brett Gardner got his first career home run (even if the Yanks did pull a prank on the home run ball), and Francisco Cervelli and Ramiro Pena also had big contributions. Given that the aching Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui were out of the lineup, it was a surprising win.
As Squawker reader Jeanne noted about last night's win:

I agree! I also have a few other observations to make on recent events:
* They had a text message poll at the Mets game we were at the other night asking who the best Met second baseman of all time was: Edgardo Alfonzo, Wally Backman, or Tim Teufel. I asked Squawker Jon why Kaz Matsui was left off the list. Dude was robbed!
* Fortunately, "Sweet Caroline" was not played at the game we were at. But it was a little sad that the biggest cheers of the night came when fans did the wave. Sheesh.
* John McEnroe in the Mets' broadcast booth? You cannot be serious!
* Have you seen the worst ceremonial first pitch ever thrown at a baseball game? Gary Dell'Abate of the Howard Stern show is the perpetrator. Click here to see more about it.
* This is the third year in a row the Yanks have been ravaged by injuries early in the season. Two years ago, they fired their strength and conditioning coach over it. Maybe the Yanks should investigate as to why it's still happening?
* Kevin Millar still gets under my skin, after all this time. Maybe it's because he pumped up the Blue Jays for this series by having them watch a DVD on the 2004 Red Sox. Yes, I'm still bitter.
* Who does David Ortiz think he's fooling by saying he's "shocked" about Manny Ramirez's PED news? And when is some reporter going to investigate Ortiz's ties to banned trainer Angel Presinal?
* Incidentally, Brett Gardner now has more homers this year than Ortiz does.
* I forgot to make a Suzyn Waldman "goodness gracious" joke in my Roger Clemens blog entry yesterday. That's inexcusable.
* The great Neil Best of Newsday mentioned me in his Watchdog blog yesterday. The subject - cheap ticket deals on the secondary market. Lots of good deals out there!
* What's up with Alex Rodriguez? He's been back with the team almost a week, and he hasn't said or done anything wacky. The last time I commented in Subway Squawkers about him being quiet, the very next day he was accused of canoodling with Madonna. This time, I hope he won't be caught with Joan Rivers or something.
* But it does look like Madonna has moved on. She was seen at a Mets (!) game at Citi Field on Mother's Day with her kids, and her new boy toy, Jesus Luz. Which means Madonna has dumped A-Rod for Jesus!
* A-Rod got grief for only tipping 15% at Hooters. But at least he didn't do what Chipper Jones did with a Hooters waitress!
