Shocker: Bernie Carbo tried to break Keith Hernandez's arms

I've always thought that Game 6 of the 1975 World Series was a little overrated. It was a great game, but only achieved immortality because a camera happened to be on Carlton Fisk as he was waving the ball fair. Why was this game any more special than Game 6 in 1991, also won by an extra-inning walkoff homer by a future Hall-of-Famer (Kirby Puckett) that forced a Game 7?

And I always felt that Bernie Carbo got short shrift for his dramatic three-run homer in the eighth inning that tied the game at 6 and set the stage for Fisk's blast.

Until now, when I saw an article "Bernie Carbo tried to pay someone to break Keith Hernandez's arms."

According to the article, Carbo went after Hernandez after Keith testified that Carbo introduced him to cocaine while they were both on the Cardinals.

In the original ESPN article, Carbo says "he has been clean and sober for 16 years and he would apologize to Hernandez for introducing him to cocaine."

There are way too many instances of how it's better to enjoy sports for what is being done on the field rather than to think about what some players are up to off the field. Puckett, for example, saw his reputation take several hits before his untimely death in 2006.

I had already heard a few weeks ago of how Carbo admitted he was on drugs when he hit his homer and in many other games as well. That's not something you want to hear, but as a fan of the 1980s Mets, I'm probably not in a position to demand retroactive drug tests.

But putting out a hit on Keith? When it comes to Game 6 in 1975, I'll stick to celebrating Fisk's homer from now on.

Is baseball boring? Or are these baseball stars just sleepwalking through life?

One of my brothers continually complains that baseball is "boring." And given the recent actions of Keith Hernandez, Billy Beane, and Ken Griffey Jr., it sounds like those baseball figures might be in agtreement with his opinion!

I wrote a piece for The Faster Times about how two of the three were caught literally napping last week during games, and one was figuratively asleep at the wheel. Keith Hernandez was snoozing during a broadcast, Ken Griffey Jr. slept during a game, and Billy Beane was so intent on his workout that he chose paying attention to that (and to listening to soccer podcasts, arguably a sport considered by Americans to be even more boring than baseball) than to watching Dallas Braden pitch a perfect game. (Not that I have any love for Braden, but still.)

Read all the details on these snoozers in my article.

No sweep relief for Yankees at Fenway

What a perfectly lousy game to watch last night. The finale of the Yankees-Red Sox series at Fenway was such a snoozefest for this Yankee fan to see, I felt like Keith Hernandez in the booth of a Mets' game or something! Combine a lousy game with an upset stomach, and a side dish of Dallas Braden pitching a perfect game and having his grandma trash A-Rod, and it wasn't exactly a red-letter day for this Squawker!

So much for the great start A.J. Burnett has gotten off to. Even Francisco Cervelli, who has seemed to work well with him, couldn't get a good start at Fenway Park out of him. Fenway continues to be a house of horrors for A.J. - last year he had a 14.21 ERA there in three games at the park. This year, his ERA at Fenway is 10.21 in two games (hey, maybe that is an improvement!) Sheesh. This time, I was the one saying, "Why, why" about the whole debacle! After the first two wins, last night left a bad taste in my mouth!

One other note about the A-Rod/Braden thing - it's amazing how Alex lives rent-free in so many people's heads! I swear, I've seen more Red Sox fans talking about him than about their team winning last night!

* * *

I was telling Squawker Jon Sunday afternoon that the Mets would have their own walkoff weekend of their own, coming back with their third weekend walkoff win. Alas, it was not to be (although David Wright did have an epic meltdown!) Hmmm, maybe Wright's time hanging out with The Situation has taught him a new vocabulary or something!

Jon and I were making all sorts of Beach Boys jokes this weekend about Giants reliever Brian Wilson. I asked Jon why he wasn't pitching Friday, setting him up for a "God Only Knows" joke. We also did a "Wouldn't It Be Nice" joke about him not being in the game. But, after not getting to pitch the first two games, Wilson completely shut down the Mets, sending, um, "Good Vibrations" to his team!

As for the snoozing Keith Hernandez, it's amazing how much he can pretty much get away with anything. Anything outrageous or silly that he does is just Keith being Keith. Can you imagine what outrage there would be if, say, John Sterling or Michael Kay were sleeping in the broadcast booth? But Keith Hernandez does it, and it's just charming. Is there anything Keith can't do?

And finally, what was up with that lame pie at Saturday's Mets walkoff win? A.J. would not approve!
