Change is coming

So here we are at our new location, and I am back from visiting my brother in Tennessee and ready to squawk. Please bookmark to easily get to us. Change is in the air, and we expect to pretty this new place up and have even more fun squawking as time goes by.

One of our first changes is that we're going to add a blogroll. If you have a baseball-related site, or are a regular reader at our site and have a personal blog, please email us at to be included in our list.

The Yankee hot stove season is heating up. I see that the Yanks already picked up a Texeira - Kanekoa Texeira, that is, in the Nick Swisher trade. (Mark Teixeira, of course, is still out there.)

I'm not sure just yet how I feel about Swisher trade. I'm guessing the Yanks are thinking he will rebound from a rough season the way Scott Brosius did. And at least he's young. Swisher does need to update his web site, though - he doesn't even mention the trade yet on the site.

Squawker Jon does raise an interesting point about the Yankees going for people with non-Yankee like hair and personalities, and making them change. Swisher's web site motto is "WORK HARD PLAY HARD." Let's hope that even if he does have to shave, he can bring a little fun to this often-lifeless team, and remember how to hit again!

* * *

The other big news, of course, is the overwhelming Yankee offer to CC Sabathia - a reported $140 million over the next six years, which is even more than Johan Santana got with the Mets. Is Sabathia worth that money? Of course not. But 1) The Yanks don't have much of a choice but to pay him, and 2) I'd rather see them overspend on him than on A.J. Burnett.

But what do you think? Tell us what's on your mind.

Hi Lisa,

I also feel that the overbidding for CC is crazy, but very necessary for us right now. We are starving for an ace and haven't really had a true ace since Clemens. Steroid allegations aside, at least Clemens was someone we always relied upon and more often than not he delivered huge for us. We need CC, and we can certainly benefit from Burnett, also. Big time. If Pettitte comes back, that would be really nice, but he's not what he was years ago. He's in obvious decline and at best he can be our #4 if he remains healthy all season.

We also need to get better with our hitting. I hope to God A-Rod becomes A-Rod again next season and hits like we all know he can. With Giambi and Abreu gone, I think acquiring Mark Texiera will be an extremely important and necessary move. We all know his credentials, and our line-up in really need of a real offensive tune-up. Maybe Swisher can become like Brosius, but maybe he won't. We can only hope.

The Yanks have dumped a boatload of payroll, so now it's time to shore up on some strong, young talented players and get back to fighting for #27 again -- seriously.

I would like to see the Yankees show the guts to NOT offer big-money deals to any free agents. One, show you can evaluate and develop talent, like real baseball people; and two, stop supporting the rest of the league with inane revenue-sharing. Hoard the money, buy some more boats, who cares - stop fueling inefficient spending in baseball and watching others make noise in the playoffs (one-and-done circa '05-'07 is not noise). -PatrickNY
