Coffee, that "Met fan" dog, is pawing both sides of the street

Squawker Jon, your Mets may technically be the top dog in town right now, with their Opening Day victory, but that so-called Met fan dog hanging outside Citi Field is really a Yankee fan. And I can prove it!

Several times last year, Jon and I saw a dog wearing a David Wright Mets shirt, a Met hat, and sporting a pipe and glasses outside Citi Field. Even this Yankee fan (and cat lover) thought the dog looked cute in the getup.

That is, until I was reading the Star-Ledger last fall during the playoffs, and found out that the very same dog was rocking the pipe, glasses, and...Yankee gear outside Yankee Stadium during the World Series!

From Brian Costa's article about Coffee, the dog pawing on both sides of the street:
No one drew as much attention from passersby as Coffee, the pit bull decked out in Yankees gear.

Coffee was dressed in a blue T-shirt commemorating Derek Jeter’s franchise hits record and a black ‘NY’ hat. She also wore a blue bandanna around her neck and, for no apparent reason, wore yellow-tinted sunglasses and chewed on a wooden pipe.

She’s a Yankees fan,” said her owner, 42-year-old Charlie Fernandez of Queens.
So much for dogs being loyal. This dog can't even make up her mind about what team to root for!

Anyhow, Coffee was back at Citi Field yesterday to celebrate the Mets' Opening Day. I saw her on NY1, and on Metstradamus' site. Here's the description of her, from the AP photo of the so-called Met fan dog.
Dressed in a New York Mets baseball player David Wright, tee shirt, a dog named "Coffee" poses for photographs in front of Citi Field on the Mets opening day in New York, Monday, April 5, 2010.
Coffee may be barking it up about the Mets now, but come October, she'll be pawing around the Bronx again. Ruff, but true!

This picture made page two of my local paper too. Great pic but, as you have written in your commentary, the owner's loyalties are suspect.

I'm not going to argue who's team the dog likes more, instead ill just call PETA.

Too bad they didnt get a picture of the owner. I'd like to see the face of the man who zaps this poor sweet dog every time it tries to lie down. Id ask for proof that the funds go to animals and why is poor Coffee being forced to wear HOT clothing on top of her FUR coat and hold a pipe in her mouth...all day long??? I'm thinking PETA needs a phone call.

I dont care who this dog likes as long as he is home and comfortable and not treated like a circus animal! This is cruel!

This is abuse in one of it's many forms. Why doesn't this poor dog's owner dress like this, wear a shock collar and do it himself. How barbaric. This story has made it to Australia and I can't tell you how angry many of us are about it all.

Coffee is an abused animal. I don't think this is cute at all.
Coffee is FORCED to sit outside Citi Field with a pipe in her mouth every Mets home game for hours on end with a shock collar on & no food, water or rest.

It's attention like this that keeps this poor dog in a perpetual state of agony. He is made to sit still THE ENTIRE TIME, with no bathroom breaks, shade, or water. If he tries to lay down, he is shocked into submission by his, I can't even say owner; his jailer. He has no teeth. They have probably been broken off by years of holding that pipe (MY speculation). There appears to be adhesive on it, to make it stay in his mouth. Won't anyone there PLEASE help this poor dog named Coffee? Why can't the idiot that is using him to panhandle sit there himself; dressed stupidly, put that pipe in his mouth & let someone shock him if he tries to move? There are still plenty of people that would put money in his beggar's tin! And I am VERY sure there are a good number of people that would enjoy shocking him with that collar!
