Jimmy Rollins declares the Phillies are the team to beat in the World Series

Jimmy Rollins is at it again. The shock-talking shortstop is now running his mouth about how his Philadelphia Phillies will beat the New York Yankees in just five games in the World Series. Check out my Faster Times piece on the issue.

Gee, I'm thinking this pronouncement might become a big deal. Unlike today's New York Post photoshopped cover of Shane Victorino in a cheerleader's skirt, which is fictional (as far as we know!) Rollins actually made this proognostication about the Phillies' chances. (As for the Post cover, shouldn't they have called the "Frillies" the "Phrillies"? Just wondering!)

What do you think of Jimmy Rollins? Tell us about it!

Jimmy is correct. Phillies *are* the team to beat. But I'm guessing you don't have a problem with all the people saying the Yankees are the team to beat. Until they're proved wrong, that is. And they will be :)

Yanks are the favorites to win this series.

Like I said yestrday, it's going to be very tough.

Yankees in 7.

Emp,

You are wrong. Yanks in 6.

Of course the Phillies are the team to beat. They're the defending World Champions, aren't they?

The Phillies are the team to beat. And the Yankees are the team to beat them.

Jimmy Rollins is the best team leader and the best shortstop in the National League. Tomorrow night, he'll be the second-best team leader and the third-best shortstop on the field.

The Phillies are a superb team, and won't roll over, and won't beat themselves. So the Yankees will have to play like they've been playing since May for 7 more games. If they do, then all 7 won't be necessary. With Burnett being a little shaky, and Pettitte due to continue the pattern and have one not-so-good postseason outing...

What the heck, it's better to clinch at home anyway. Yankees in 6.

Post reached a new low with that stupid cover ...trash printing trash...

As for Jimmy's prediction of Phillies in 5...I remember in the 2000 WS a certain Met (Benny Agbyani)going on Regis and predicting the Met's in 5... how did that work out? :o)

All in all ..should be a great series ...I can't wait for the game tonight (rain, rain go away ...don't come back till a week from Saturday)...GOOOOOOOO CC !!! GOOOOOO
YANKEES !!!

Go Yankees 2009 1!!

Nothing like a little smack talk before a series. It worked so well for Torii Hunter and the Angels--I welcome it from Rollins!

So far this year they've been able to feast on the Rockies and Dodgers during the playoffs. I think the Phillies are about to get a rude awakening when Game 1 begins.

But Mo put it best when he said (extreme paraphrasing = me) that Rollins' predictions and reality are two very separate things. ;)

Uncle Mike, do you consider Rollins a better SS than Hanley Ramirez? I'd say in 2009 he wasn't even putting up the best production at short in his own division.

Hanley Ramirez is a joke. Jimmy Rollins is a winner. Derek Jeter is a Hall-of-Famer.

But Ramirez is still better than Jose Reyes.

The experts overwhelmingly pick the Yankees to win this series.

Emp - you're not surprised are you? I'm honestly surprised that even one picked the Phillies. I did notice that nobody picked less than six games and I'm not sure about that:

Game 1: Despite Lee being very good, edge Yanks with CC at home.

Game 2: Pedro is a big question mark - has he really faced a lineup like the Yankees this year?

Game 3: Cole Hamels has been a shadow of his '08 self

Game 4: I haven't read enough about what each team is thinking so I don't know who the likely match-up would be so no comment.

Of course anything can happen in any of these games, but if the series goes back to Philly with NY up 2-0 then Yanks in 4 or 5 is not only possible, but likely. Not that I think I'm making a bold or daring prediction here.

Tonight should be very telling - I think all the pressure is on Philly to try and sneak by with this one.

Stay dry and cheers from Boston!

Hey Paul - I guess I'm a little surprised at the number of people picking the Yanks. I expected more of a 50/50 split, but I hope and pray that all these people predicting the Yanks win are right.

I know how tough the Phillies are, and I know the Yanks are, too, but I guess I'll feel a lot better if we can take Game 1 tonight.

I'd love to shut Rollins' mouth.
